The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, was, on Wednesday, thrown into pandemonium, when a section of the building went up in flames.

Activities within the premises came to a halt, while staff of the commission scampered for safety, just as some brave ones went for fire extinguishers to battle the fire, pending the arrival of men of the state fire service.

Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that the fire incident, which occurred at about 10.30 a.m, started as a result of electrical fault from the mains, a section of a building where electricity supply was controlled.

After a distress call, a team of fire service officials, led by a director of Fire Service, Mr Ismaila Oladipo, arrived at the scene, but discovered that there was no need to use water, as the situation had been put under control.

Oladipo expressed regret that his men, after visiting the office of the commission recently, submitted a report which he expected the commission to have utilised for the purpose of preventing fire outbreak.

But the head of the Public Affairs Unit of the commission, Alhaji Ayo Folami, said it was the first time such incident would happen in the building, adding that the alertness of the staff prevented it from becoming a major disaster.

He gave the assurance that “nothing was damaged in the fire incident, except the wires that got burnt. It is nothing serious because it occurred only in the part of the building where wire fuses and other electrical gadgets for changing source of electricity are stationed.”

He confirmed that men of the fire service had earlier visited the premises in the past and made some recommendations which were sent to the headquarters for approval, while giving the assurance that the report was receiving the attention of the headquarters on the development.
