The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied any involvement in the raid of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters located in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Reports had emerged earlier that masked security operatives, suspected to be from the DSS, stormed the NLC headquarters on Wednesday night. The raid was reportedly linked to allegations that members of the organized labour sponsored the #EndBadGovernance protest.
Multiple labour leaders, speaking in separate interviews, confirmed the raid but stated that the building was largely empty as most people had left for their homes. One of the leaders recounted a conversation with a private security guard stationed at the building, who claimed that operatives with assorted rifles entered the premises around 10 pm.
The security guard reported that the operatives headed directly to the 10th floor, where the office of NLC President Joe Ajaero is located, before moving to the second floor, which houses additional NLC offices.
DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya has now explicitly refuted any involvement by the agency. "Good morning dear friends. Please kindly note that the Service (DSS) did not carry out any operation at the NLC office in Abuja," Afunanya stated.
