The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed a major deployment of police resources to facilitate the rescue of 20 medical students kidnapped in Otukpo, Benue State on Thursday evening. The students, from the University of Jos and the University of Maiduguri, were en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students’ annual convention in Enugu when they were ambushed by gunmen.
In response to the alarming abduction, Egbetokun has mobilized a range of assets, including tactical teams, drones, helicopters, and specialized vehicles. The deployment aims to support the Benue State Command in securing the immediate release of the students.
The Inspector-General condemned the kidnapping as a “reprehensible, appalling, and unacceptable act,” emphasizing the police’s commitment to recovering the victims. A statement from Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, highlighted the extensive resources being utilized, including additional units from the Force Intelligence and Investigation Department (FID-STS and FID-IRT), advanced aerial surveillance, and ground support vehicles.
Egbetokun also addressed concerns over potential foreign involvement in the crisis and set conditions for public protests, aiming to ensure orderly demonstrations. He reiterated the force's dedication to combating crime, particularly kidnappings, and called on the public for assistance.
“The Nigeria Police Force stands in solidarity with the victims and their families during this difficult period,” Egbetokun stated. “We are determined to leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of the perpetrators and will continue our relentless efforts against crime.”
The IGP has appealed for actionable intelligence from the public to aid in the rescue operation. Individuals with pertinent information are encouraged to contact local police stations, the state command control number, or the Force Headquarters via [email protected].
“The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its mission to protect Nigerian citizens and uphold peace and stability across the country,” Adejobi added.
