Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has characterized President Bola Tinubu as a self-made leader who owes his political ascendancy to no one, including his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. Speaking on Tinubu's journey to the presidency, Lamido described the current president as a "daring" figure who navigated his way to the top against the odds.

Lamido recalled Tinubu's bold declaration in Abeokuta, Ogun State, prior to the APC convention, where he asserted it was his turn to rule Nigeria. "And Buhari, very naive, was watching. He never liked Tinubu," Lamido remarked, suggesting that Buhari had someone else in mind for the presidency. "He didn’t even trust his own vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; he wanted Ahmed Lawan. But his calculation was absurd. You have done eight years for the North, and you wanted another Northerner for another eight years? No."

According to Lamido, Buhari’s attempt to influence the succession process failed due to Nigeria's complex political dynamics. Despite Buhari’s presence at the convention, it was Tinubu—whom he allegedly never supported—who emerged victorious. "Tinubu knows that his victory wasn’t from Buhari, therefore, he owes him nothing," Lamido added.

Tinubu's success, Lamido noted, came despite significant opposition. "He wasn’t the choice of Afenifere, Obasanjo never liked him, but he became president. All the other groups, including the governors, were there, but he won. He was determined to demolish all obstacles, and he crushed them," Lamido said, emphasizing Tinubu's tenacity and political acumen.

Lamido's comments offer a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that shaped the outcome of Nigeria's last presidential election, highlighting Tinubu’s independence and strategic prowess in securing the nation’s highest office.
