The UK government has unveiled a new set of financial requirements for foreign students, significantly raising the amount of proof needed for living expenses as part of the visa application process. The changes, introduced by the Home Office, will take effect for students arriving from January 2, 2025.
Under the revised rules, international students planning to study in London must now demonstrate they have £1,483 per month to cover living expenses. For students studying outside the capital, the required amount is £1,136 per month. These new figures mark an increase from the previous rates of £1,334 for London and £1,023 for other regions.
For students studying in London for nine or more months, this means they will need to show at least £13,348 in savings when applying for their visa. The Home Office explained that the adjustments aim to ensure that foreign students have sufficient funds to cover their living costs, aligning with the updated maintenance loans offered to domestic students.
The financial requirements will apply for each month of a student’s course, up to a maximum of nine months. However, students who have already paid a deposit towards UK accommodation can deduct that amount from the total proof of funds required.
The Home Office also noted that these financial benchmarks will be periodically adjusted to reflect inflation and future increases in maintenance loans for UK students.
