Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has declared that he will not support Governor Godwin Obaseki or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, in the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial elections scheduled for September 21.
In a candid interview on Channels Television's *Politics Today* on Friday, Wike made it clear that his support would not extend to either candidate. He labeled Obaseki as an ingrate and revealed that despite Obaseki’s request for his backing for Ighodalo, Wike had firmly declined. He cited a history of receiving nothing but insults in return for his past support of Obaseki as the reason for his refusal.
Wike also addressed concerns related to the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, who is his cousin. He firmly stated that no one, including the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), could coerce his cousin into any wrongdoing. Wike expressed frustration over what he described as unnecessary controversy regarding the REC’s posting, noting that the appointment occurred over a year ago.
The FCT Minister's statements have sparked a fresh debate on the political dynamics in Edo State and the broader implications for the PDP’s strategy in the gubernatorial race.
