In a shocking case of child abuse, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Akwa Ibom Command, have rescued a 12-year-old girl, Bright Sunday, who had been locked in a dilapidated building and subjected to torture by her father and stepmother for two years. The incident occurred in Ikot Ukporo Idoro village, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Addressing the press in Uyo on Saturday, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Eluyemi Eluwade, revealed that the girl’s father, Ndifreke Sunday, 38, and her stepmother, Victory Sunday, 28, had accused the child of being a witch. This unfounded accusation led to the severe mistreatment of the young girl.

The rescue mission and arrest of the suspects followed a complaint lodged by the Ministry of Justice. Both the father and stepmother are being charged under Section 10 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law of 2020 for child deprivation and abuse.

"The arrest was made on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Ikot Ukporo Idoro Village, following reports of the child being subjected to inhumane treatment by her father and stepmother. The suspects admitted to locking her up after she 'confessed' to being a witch and causing their afflictions," Eluwade said.

The young girl, narrating her ordeal, said she was confined in a dilapidated room, deprived of food, denied basic hygiene, and regularly beaten by her stepmother. She recounted that she was only fed once every two days, bathed twice a month, and completely deprived of education.

Condemning the barbaric and inhumane treatment, the NSCDC Commandant described the actions as "callous and heinous," warning that such acts would not go unpunished. He urged parents to refrain from such brutal practices under any guise.

The victim has been transferred to a Gender-Based Violence Shelter Home for care and rehabilitation, while the suspects are expected to be handed over to the relevant prosecuting agency for further legal action.
