Yobe State Government has confirmed the death of four individuals due to acute diarrhoea in Gujba Local Government Area. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Health, Lawan Gana, during a press briefing in Damaturu on Monday.
The outbreak was identified in the Jangalawaji and Tadandara settlements within Gujba Ward, areas recently impacted by severe flooding. The commissioner explained that the floods may have contributed to the spread of the disease.
Samples from the deceased have been collected and are currently undergoing analysis to determine the exact cause of the illness. Commissioner Gana reassured the public that the government is taking all necessary measures to manage the situation effectively and to prevent further cases.
Addressing concerns about the nature of the outbreak, Gana refuted claims of a cholera epidemic in the Gujba and Ngelzarma regions, emphasizing that only laboratory results can confirm such diagnoses. He urged residents to remain calm and assured them that the government is working diligently to address and resolve the health crisis.
