Two teenagers are recovering in the hospital following a suspected acid attack that took place outside Westminster Academy in west London. The attack, which occurred on Monday afternoon, involved the throwing of a corrosive substance at students and a staff member, leaving one victim with potentially life-changing injuries.
A 14-year-old girl has been admitted to the hospital with serious injuries, described by authorities as “potentially life-changing.” A 16-year-old boy was also injured in the incident; however, his condition is stable, and his injuries are not considered life-threatening. A third victim, a 27-year-old woman, has since been discharged after suffering non-life-changing injuries.
London police confirmed that tests are underway to identify the nature of the substance used in the attack, with preliminary assessments indicating it may be acidic. The police are conducting “urgent enquiries” to locate and apprehend those responsible for the assault.
Numera Anwar, principal of Westminster Academy, expressed her deep concern for the affected individuals and the wider community. She described the incident as “distressing,” noting that it involved what appeared to be an “acid-like corrosive substance.” Anwar revealed that the attack occurred just as students and staff were leaving the school for the day.
In response to the incident, the school was closed on Tuesday to facilitate a thorough investigation and to ensure that safety measures are reinforced ahead of a return to normal operations.
This alarming incident is part of a troubling trend in the UK, where the use of corrosive substances in assaults has surged in recent years, experiencing a notable resurgence in 2022. London has seen a significant increase in violent incidents among teenagers, including knife crime and shootings. Notably, in July, a 15-year-old boy was tragically found fatally shot in a park near the site of Monday's attack.
