The Nigerian Senate has issued a stern warning to several high-profile government officials, including Minister of Works David Umahi, Head of Service Didi Esther Walson-Jack, and Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Chair Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for failing to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

This ultimatum follows complaints from Senator Neda Imasuen, the committee chairman, regarding the refusal of these officials to respond to invitations concerning various petitions lodged against them. In addition to the aforementioned officials, chief executives from Union Homes Savings and Loans Plc, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, and Sally Best Properties Limited are also at risk of arrest.

During a recent session, Senator Imasuen moved a motion under Order 42 of the Senate's Standing Rules, highlighting the lack of response from the heads of these agencies. He emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency, stating, "Several invitations sent to heads of the affected agencies have been ignored, hindering our ability to address the concerns of aggrieved Nigerians and corporate bodies."

In response to Senator Imasuen's motion, Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged immediate action. "You have the constitutional power as outlined in Section 89 of the 1999 Constitution. Use it to issue warrants of arrest for any agency head who fails to appear before the committee," Akpabio stated, reinforcing the need for justice and fairness in the handling of petitions.

Following the Senate's approval for the issuance of warrants, Senator Imasuen informed reporters that a detailed list of the agencies affected would be released shortly. "Fresh invitations have been dispatched to the heads of these agencies, and warrants will be issued if they continue to ignore our summons," he stated.

Additionally, the committee plans to expedite the processing of a specific petition filed by Mr. Onyebuchi Obioha, concerning the withholding of his daughter’s results by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) based on a contentious report by an examination supervisor.
