The Kano State Police Command has successfully apprehended a 31-year-old man, Salisu Bala, who allegedly posed as a member of the Police Special Constabulary to extort money from unsuspecting citizens.
In a statement released on Friday, October 18, 2024, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the arrest, noting that Bala confessed to using illicit drugs. Reports of the suspect's activities prompted public outcry, particularly from residents in the Sabon Gari, Fagge, and Koki Quarters of Kano Metropolis.
“Upon receiving these reports, the Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, instructed the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the affected areas to enhance surveillance and ensure the arrest of these impostors,” the statement indicated.
The police operation culminated on October 14, 2024, around 8:30 PM, when Bala was arrested by actual members of the Police Special Constabulary while wearing a black police uniform and a camouflage peak cap in Koki Quarters.
Investigations revealed that Bala was neither a police officer nor a legitimate member of the Police Special Constabulary. Authorities found four different sets of police uniforms in his residence, further confirming his role as an impostor.
The Commissioner of Police assured the public that the Kano State Police Command remains vigilant against impersonation and extortion attempts by individuals claiming to be police personnel. He urged anyone who recognizes Bala or has complaints about him to reach out to the command at 07038188127.
