A woman, Chiwendu, has petitioned a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Customary Court in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, alleging that her husband, Emeka, poisoned her drink, resulting in the loss of a pregnancy. She is seeking the dissolution of their 13-year marriage, citing abuse, abandonment, and denial of access to their children.
The petition, filed by her lawyer, Mr. Moses Ibe, has been scheduled for further mention on November 5, after Emeka failed to appear in court. Chiwendu claims the marriage, solemnized under both Native Law and Church vows in 2011, has produced three children, aged 12, 11, and two. However, she describes her husband as violent, adulterous, and frequently abusive.
In her statement, Chiwendu alleged that Emeka expressed no desire for more children after the birth of their second child. Despite family pressure from his mother to expand their family, Emeka allegedly reacted violently when she became pregnant again, leading her to accuse him of poisoning her drink, causing a miscarriage.
After a second pregnancy in 2021, which she initially hid due to fear of further harm, Chiwendu claimed Emeka denied responsibility, accused her of infidelity, and eventually forced her out of their home. He allegedly packed her belongings and barred her from returning.
According to the petition, her husband’s behavior has grown increasingly aggressive. Recently, he allegedly accused her and her mother of causing his misfortunes through spiritual manipulation. Tensions escalated when, on September 19, Emeka reportedly arrived at her shop with men, confiscated her goods, and threatened her if she returned.
Chiwendu disclosed that she has been denied any contact with her children, as Emeka has allegedly used a court order to prevent her from seeing them, even at their school. She claims that he has moved a younger woman into their marital home and that this woman has mistreated their children, whose health she says has visibly declined.
In her petition, Chiwendu seeks full custody of their children, a restraining order against her husband, and monthly maintenance payments of N1 million to cover the children’s needs. She also requests that the court compel Emeka to return her belongings and compensate her for the loss of goods taken from her shop.
The case has attracted public interest, as the respondent has yet to respond to the accusations. The court is expected to take up the case further in November.
