After years of public tension, Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan and his brother, Aremu Afolayan, have finally reconciled, putting an end to their longstanding feud. The brothers, sons of the late legendary filmmaker Ade Love, publicly buried the hatchet at a wake-keep ceremony for their mother in Oyo State on Friday, November 22, 2024.
The feud between Kunle and Aremu had been brewing for years, reaching a peak in 2018 when Aremu accused their late father of living in poverty despite his fame. In response, Kunle lashed out at his brother, calling his claims “stupid” during a viral interview.
However, the tension between the siblings took a dramatic turn at the wake-keep, where emotions ran high and love ultimately prevailed. During the ceremony, Kunle made a heartfelt statement, revealing his role in Aremu’s life. "I’m not his brother, I’m his father," Kunle said. "I’m 10 years older than him, and I trained him. But love conquers all."
Aremu, visibly moved, also offered a public apology, expressing his gratitude for their reconciliation. "My greatest joy today is that my mother made us talk," Aremu said. "I was the black sheep of the family, and I disagree with Kunle, but I’m sorry for the Instagram backlash. I love you, Kunle."
The reconciliation marks a significant moment in the lives of the Afolayan brothers, who had been at odds for several years. Fans and family members present at the ceremony celebrated the healing of the rift, with many expressing hope that the brothers’ bond would remain strong moving forward.
