Two suspects have been apprehended at separate crime scenes on Okhoro and Cemetery Roads in Benin, Edo State, for alleged vandalism of electricity infrastructure.
Mrs. Evelyn Gbiwen, Head of Branding and Corporate Communications at BEDC Electricity PLC, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Sunday in Benin City.
According to Gbiwen, one of the suspects vandalized 200KVA and 500KVA substations in the Play House and Iyayi areas. Upon apprehension, the suspect pretended to be a BEDC staff member and presented a fake identity card.
She stated that the suspect was apprehended with 70mm2 by 7 meters of cable taken from the Play House 200kVA substation and another 70mm2 by 7 meters of cable from the Iyayi 500kVA substation.
The second suspect was arrested at another location with stolen items, including 10 meters of copper wire from a 500KVA power transformer at Third Cemetery and 20 meters of 500mm2 cable from a substation on Old Rubber Board Road in Benin.
Gbiwen described the suspect’s arrest as a major milestone in the fight against vandalism and reaffirmed the company’s dedication to addressing the issue.
“We are resolute in our fight against vandalism, as it doesn’t only affect our operations, but also tarnishes our reputation.
“We urge communities to be vigilant and guard their substations, as we work together to prevent these malicious acts.
“Our appeal also goes to the communities to report any suspicious activities around substations and support the company’s efforts in combating vandalism, ” she added.
