A 50-year-old Nigerian businessman, who has lived in Brazil for 35 years, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for allegedly smuggling 700 grams of cocaine into the country.
The suspect was detained on Friday, November 29, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos after arriving on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from São Paulo, Brazil, via Addis Ababa.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi disclosed that the suspect was intercepted at the E-Arrival hall of the airport. A body scan revealed foreign objects concealed in his stomach, prompting operatives to place him under excretion observation.
“During the observation, the suspect expelled 29 wraps of substances which tested positive for cocaine, with a total weight of 700 grams,” Babafemi confirmed.
The businessman, who runs an African store in Brazil selling provisions, shoes, and clothes, admitted to purchasing the drugs in São Paulo with plans to sell them in Nigeria. He explained that his motive was to raise additional capital to expand his business.
The NDLEA has launched further investigations into the case as part of its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking through Nigeria’s airports.
