The Yobe State Police Command has issued vital safety tips for bank customers to protect themselves from ATM fraud, following the arrest of three suspects linked to a criminal syndicate targeting ATM users in the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed the guidelines in a statement aimed at reducing the risk of financial crimes. He emphasized the need for vigilance and proper precautionary measures to safeguard personal information and banking details.
Among the tips provided, the command urged ATM users to:
- Be aware of their surroundings and use secure ATMs.
- Always cover the keypad when entering their PIN to prevent onlookers from capturing the code.
- Avoid using debit cards with signs of tampering and prioritize cards equipped with chip technology.
- Keep PINs confidential and refrain from sharing them with anyone.
- Avoid easily guessable PINs, such as birthdates or sequential numbers.
“By following these safety tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to ATM fraud and related crimes,” DSP Abdulkarim stated.
The announcement follows a recent breakthrough in the command’s fight against cybercrime, where operatives apprehended three suspects linked to a network targeting unsuspecting ATM users. The arrests underline the command’s commitment to protecting citizens and tackling financial crimes in the state.
Residents have been encouraged to report suspicious activities around ATMs to the police as authorities ramp up efforts to curb cybercrime and ensure public safety.
