In a dramatic and heart-wrenching case, a four-year-old boy, Hope Evans, abducted from his school in Rivers State, has been rescued after over two months of intensive police investigation. The suspect, identified as Blessing Okoi, was arrested on November 29, 2024, in Maraba, Abuja.

The incident began on October 31, 2024, when Hope disappeared from Community Primary School Azubie, Port Harcourt. According to SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Hope was lured away by Okoi, who offered him biscuits and eggs. The abduction went unnoticed until later that day when his family realized he was missing.

School officials reported that the suspect, unknown to them, had referred to herself as “Destiny’s mum.” However, upon visiting “Destiny’s” residence, the boy’s family discovered that Okoi had vacated the premises the same evening.

On November 1, the case was escalated to the Trans Amadi Police Station and subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further probing. Suspecting the suspect had fled to Abuja, Hope’s aunt reported the case to the FCT Police Command, prompting Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, to order an immediate investigation.

After weeks of persistent tracking, police apprehended Okoi in Abuja and rescued Hope. During interrogation, Okoi claimed to be Hope’s biological mother and had renamed him “David Evans.” However, the boy’s mother, Miss Lydia Jonah, provided compelling evidence of her relationship with her son, debunking Okoi’s claims.

Investigations revealed that Okoi had convinced a former lover, Evans, that Hope was their biological child, the result of a past pregnancy. Evans had accepted the boy as his own, believing Okoi’s fabricated story.

Adding another twist, police found another young boy in Okoi’s custody, whom she claimed was her son, stating that the child’s father was deceased.

The boy’s mother was reunited with her son on December 6, 2024, in Abuja, expressing profound gratitude to the police for their tireless efforts.

The FCT Commissioner of Police praised the officers involved in the successful rescue and emphasized the importance of schools prioritizing children’s safety. Okoi remains in custody as investigations continue, and she is expected to face charges in court soon.
