The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered an illegal storage site in Rivers State used for housing illegally refined petroleum products.
Joachim Okafor, the NSCDC State Commandant, confirmed the discovery, revealing that the facility, located in the Elelewo community of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, was equipped with large storage tanks and numerous cans filled with the illicitly refined products.
The operation, led by Okafor and his team from the NSCDC’s Anti-Vandal Unit, was a result of the corps’ deployment of cutting-edge technology to track illegal crude oil activities. This technology, designed to detect and monitor crude oil theft, proved instrumental in locating the illegal operation.
In his statement, Okafor highlighted the severe implications of such illegal activities, pointing out that not only do they undermine the country’s economy, but they also pose significant environmental risks and health threats to local communities. The NSCDC has vowed to continue efforts to dismantle illegal operations contributing to the nation’s oil theft crisis.
