A soldier, acting on the orders of a Chinese expatriate, has reportedly assaulted two Nigerian workers at the Abule Ado axis of the Lagos Blue Line rail project, according to eyewitness accounts. The Chinese national is identified as an employee of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the company responsible for the electric rapid transit line construction in Lagos.
The assault, which occurred on Friday, is the third such incident in the past month involving Nigerian workers with CCECC. Sources say the two workers, after completing their shift, attempted to board the back cabin of a company’s Toyota Hilux to return home. This action reportedly angered the Chinese expatriate, who then instructed a soldier accompanying him to “deal extensively” with the workers.
An eyewitness explained, “At about 5:30 pm, after work, the two workers tried to climb onto the back of the Hilux, where the Chinese man was seated. He immediately ordered the soldier to beat them up, and the soldier began hitting them with his gun, causing serious injuries.”
This incident has drawn sharp criticism, with locals lamenting the treatment of Nigerian workers on the project. One source pointed out the disparity in pay, claiming that workers are earning less than N70,000 despite working long hours, often from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, seven days a week.
“This has been happening for a while, and the workers are being paid poorly,” another witness stated. “It’s disgraceful that a soldier, paid by Nigerian taxpayers, was ordered by a foreigner to brutalize fellow Nigerians. The authorities, including the Nigerian Army and Lagos State government, must investigate this.”
The assault comes just weeks after another Chinese national was filmed mutilating Naira notes during a confrontation with Lagos State government officials. The video, which went viral, showed the Chinese national resisting the shutdown of his company for violating local laws, and tearing Naira notes, an act that sparked outrage among Nigerians.
Many have called for swift action from both Nigerian and Lagos state authorities to address these ongoing issues, ensuring the safety and dignity of Nigerian workers involved in the construction of the Lagos Blue Line.
