A Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army has been arrested for allegedly engaging in inappropriate segxwal activities with junior colleagues, primarily non-commissioned officers, in Borno State.

Military sources, speaking anonymously to SaharaReporters, confirmed that the suspect, identified only as Lieutenant Abubakar, was apprehended in Bama, Borno State, last month. The arrest followed an investigation by the military police under the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, who had gathered evidence of the alleged misconduct.

Sources revealed that numerous junior soldiers had accused the Lieutenant of molestation and engaging in segxwal acts with them over an extended period. One military source confirmed that the officer was caught in the act, leading to his arrest.

A Captain in the Army commented on the widespread issue, claiming that such incidents of same-sex activity were becoming increasingly common within the ranks. However, he alleged that senior military officials were failing to address the situation effectively, often covering up these acts rather than taking disciplinary action.

Under Nigerian law, same-sex segxwal activity is criminalized following the passage of the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act in 2013. The punishment varies depending on the region, with Shari’a law in Northern Nigeria carrying a death sentence by stoning, while secular laws elsewhere stipulate up to 14 years in prison.

Borno, where the incident occurred, is one of the 12 northern states that has adopted Shari’a law. As such, the suspect could face severe legal consequences if convicted.
