Benue State Police have arrested Dr. Ichor Tersagh Smart, a lecturer at Joseph Sawuaan Tarka University, Makurdi, in connection with the kidnapping of Mrs. Susan Anyagh, wife of the university’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chairman, Mr. Paul Anyagh.

According to the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, the incident occurred on December 7, 2024, when Mrs. Anyagh was abducted along Otukpo Road in Makurdi. She was reportedly flagged down by individuals who pretended to need assistance before they forcefully entered her car, held her at gunpoint, and ordered her to drive towards Wurukum.

While being driven away, Mrs. Anyagh allegedly saw Dr. Smart standing by the car and attempted to signal him for help, but he reportedly ignored her and walked away. During the abduction, she was told that Dr. Smart had ordered her execution, causing her to panic.

As the abductors approached a police checkpoint, they turned off the road, stopped the car, and assaulted Mrs. Anyagh. They robbed her of N1,350,000 she had in the vehicle before using a vehicle jack to strike her on the back of the neck, knocking her unconscious.

The police immediately launched a rescue operation, and with the help of patrol officers, Mrs. Anyagh was located and freed. Dr. Smart was arrested in connection with the crime, and an investigation is ongoing.

The police have assured the public that further updates on the case will be provided as the investigation progresses.
