In a significant breakthrough against banditry in Northwest Nigeria, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade have captured Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer. Wurgi is suspected to have orchestrated the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, earlier this year.
The Emir was abducted on July 9, 2024, along with his son and brother in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area, Sokoto State. After failed ransom negotiations involving cash and motorcycles, the monarch was tragically killed on August 22.
Acting on intelligence, troops conducted a precision operation on December 14 in Shinkafi, Zamfara State. Reports indicated that Wurgi was being treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained during a clash with a rival group. He was arrested while in transit to the facility, bearing multiple cuts and gunshot wounds.
Sources close to the operation revealed that two of Wurgi’s accomplices managed to escape during the raid. However, another suspect, believed to have transported him using a tricycle, was taken into custody.
Further investigations have linked Wurgi to international arms smuggling operations and familial ties with notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. His son, Sani Duna, is also suspected to be involved in the bandit network, reportedly serving as a getaway driver for Turji.
Wurgi’s apprehension has been hailed as a major milestone in the fight against terrorism and banditry in the region. Residents of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states have expressed relief and optimism that the operation will help curb the violence that has plagued their communities for years.
Currently held at an undisclosed location, Wurgi faces interrogation as security forces intensify efforts to dismantle his network. A manhunt is underway for his fleeing accomplices.
This development underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the Northwest, a region deeply affected by banditry and insurgency.
