The Federal Executive Council has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the decision was made during the council’s last meeting for 2024, held at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Idris stated on Monday, “The third item is that there is also a decision taken by the Federal Executive Council to rename the University of Abuja to honour elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon. The University of Abuja will, henceforth, be called Yakubu Gowon University.”
The Minister also noted that the process will require legislative work and will be sent to the National Assembly for approval.
Additionally, Idris noted that the council will proceed on a recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
