A Nigerian photographer has spoken out about his recent arrest by the police, which he claims occurred simply for taking street photographs. The incident, which has sparked outrage on social media, was shared by the photographer through a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter).

According to his account, the photographer was snapping pictures in a public space when he was unexpectedly detained by law enforcement officers. He stated that the police demanded ₦100,000 for his release, and shockingly, had a Point of Sale (POS) agent on standby to facilitate the transaction.

“They want ₦100k,” the photographer wrote in his initial post.

In a follow-up update, the photographer revealed that after much negotiation, he was forced to pay ₦30,000 to secure his release. “I paid ₦30k for my freedom. I’m out now! But this is ridiculous,” he added.

While in detention, the photographer encountered several other individuals who had also been arrested for taking photos. “I met these guys who had been arrested for simply taking pictures with their phones. The station has a zero-tolerance policy on cameras,” he explained.

The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of photographers and the legal boundaries surrounding photography in public spaces. Many social media users have criticized the police’s actions, calling for greater accountability and transparency in how such arrests are handled. The story has reignited debates on the rights of citizens to freely document their surroundings without fear of harassment or unlawful detention.
