The Federal Government has announced its decision to review the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project, reducing its scope from 10 lanes to six as part of cost-cutting measures.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed the plans on Friday during an inspection tour of the highway, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Umahi explained that the adjustment was prompted by significant variations in the original designs and unforeseen challenges. These include extensive interventions like clearing refuse deposits up to 10 meters deep and backfilling affected sections of the road.
"The cost implications of the original 10-lane design, coupled with the additional work required due to the terrain, made the review unavoidable," Umahi said.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road is a critical infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity along Nigeria's southern corridor. However, its implementation has faced hurdles due to design complexities and escalating costs.
Umahi assured stakeholders that despite the reduction in lane capacity, the revised design would maintain the road's functionality and durability, ensuring it meets the needs of users and contributes to regional economic development.
Further details about the revised project timeline and budget are expected to be released in the coming weeks as the ministry finalizes the new plans.
