The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) has shut down three major companies for extracting significant amounts of groundwater for commercial purposes without proper authorization.
The affected companies—Nigerian Bottling Company (producers of Coca-Cola), FrieslandCampina (makers of Peak Milk), and Guinness Nigeria Plc—were sealed during an enforcement exercise conducted on Tuesday in Lagos.
Mr. Olowu Babatunde, Director of Technical Services at LASWARCO, revealed that the commission had engaged with these companies for over seven years to ensure compliance with state regulations, but the efforts yielded minimal results.
“LASWARCO operates under a law that empowers us to regulate entities that extract large quantities of groundwater for commercial use. Despite our extended dialogue with these companies—Coca-Cola, FrieslandCampina, and Guinness—some have only partially complied, while others have ignored the regulations entirely,” Babatunde stated.
The enforcement is part of the commission’s renewed efforts to implement its regulatory framework fully and ensure that abstractors adhere to environmental standards.
According to Babatunde, these companies extract substantial amounts of water, and their lack of compliance poses challenges to resource management and sustainability in the state.
The sealing of these facilities underscores LASWARCO's commitment to safeguarding Lagos’s water resources and compelling corporations to meet their legal and environmental obligations.
