On December 18, 2024, a tragic stampede during a children's funfair in Ibadan resulted in the deaths of 35 children.
The event, organized by former Queen Naomi Silekunola and promoted by broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat's Agidigbo 88.7 FM, was intended to distribute palliatives to children.
However, the overwhelming crowd led to the fatal incident.
In the aftermath, both Naomi Silekunola and Oriyomi Hamzat have been arrested and charged with conspiracy, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities for the event.
They have been remanded in prison custody, with the next hearing scheduled for January 13, 2025.
The charges against them include:
Negligent Acts Causing Harm: Failing to ensure the safety of attendees, leading to the tragic loss of life.
Failure to Provide Adequate Security and Medical Facilities: Not arranging sufficient security personnel and medical support for the event.
These charges reflect the serious nature of the incident and the legal consequences the organizers are facing.
