An intense scene unfolded in Umuahia on Thursday when disgruntled members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) disrupted a meeting organized by the National President, Emeka Rollas. The protestors, who expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing leadership crisis within the guild, stormed the venue, leading to a standoff that required police intervention.
The protesting members, led by Chika Okezie, Egwuatu Daniel, and Nathaniel Nwoko, expressed their objections to what they described as an "illegal" gathering. They demanded the recognition of David Onyebuchi Amalaha, elected as the chairman of the AGN Abia State chapter in May 2023. Amalaha has been locked in several legal battles, challenging the AGN national body over what he and his supporters allege is the wrongful imposition of leadership in the state.
According to the protestors, the imposition of five interim state chairmen by Emeka Rollas since 2023 has exacerbated divisions and fostered crises within the AGN. These actions, they claim, have further fueled tensions among members, with accusations of favoritism and poor governance.
The situation escalated until the Zone 9 Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Umuahia intervened, preventing the confrontation from turning violent. Police Public Relations Officer SP Iheanetu Bruno Chukwudera confirmed that while there was chaos, no arrests were made. He explained that both Rollas and the leaders of the protesting faction were invited by the Assistant Inspector General of Police to provide statements about the incident.
"The protestors have formed a faction within the guild due to leadership disputes. However, no one was detained; they were only asked to submit their accounts of what transpired," Chukwudera said.
As the AGN leadership dispute continues to unfold, the future of the guild’s unity remains uncertain, with calls for resolution growing louder.
