The Lagos State Police Command has successfully dismantled several robbery gangs preying on Uber drivers, with seven suspects arrested in connection to two separate incidents.

One of the gangs, a four-man group, included a U.S. returnee who was involved in the brutal murder of an Uber driver on January 9, 2025. According to the Commissioner of Police, CP Olarewaju Ishola, the suspects ordered an Uber ride at Chevron in Lekki, heading towards Obalende. Upon reaching a secluded spot in Obalende around midnight, the gang attacked the unsuspecting driver, stabbing him multiple times in the neck in an attempt to steal his Toyota Camry.

Thanks to the intervention of passersby, the suspects were unable to steal the vehicle. Two of the suspects were quickly apprehended and handed over to the police. Investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects in the Chevron area, and the victim’s body was later transported to the Mainland Hospital Yaba morgue. The suspects have been identified as Emeka Akwara (19), David Segun (21), Samuel Ariori (21), and Lukman Ariori (19).

In a separate case, three suspects—Edmond Julius (34), Abdullahi Umar (32), and Saturday Oke (40)—were arrested in connection to the murder of another Uber driver, Oluwaseyi Fowler, in the Ajah area three months ago. The suspects confessed to kidnapping Fowler, robbing him of his vehicle, and murdering him. They sold the stolen car to a receiver, and the police were able to recover the decomposed body of the victim and the vehicle.

This marks the third such attack on Uber drivers within three months, raising concerns about the growing threat to drivers in the city.

In response to these crimes, CP Ishola urged Uber drivers to carry only one passenger at a time, conduct thorough checks on passengers, and ensure they sit in the front seat. He also announced plans to distribute security tips to drivers to help them avoid becoming victims of similar attacks.

Assessing the overall security situation in Lagos, CP Ishola commended the state's safety during the recent festive season. He revealed that over 500,000 Nigerians from the diaspora arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport to celebrate, with 90% of them staying in Lagos without any incidents.

“Lagos is rated as the safest state in Nigeria, and we owe it to the unwavering commitment of our officers and the support of the Lagos State Government,” he said.

Between September 2024 and January 2025, the Lagos police also seized various arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles originally taken from police divisions during the #EndSARS protests.
