Bariu Aliu, also known as Malo, the traditional chief priest of the Igunuko shrine at Alpha Beach, Ajah, Lagos State, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Aliu, who had been a fugitive since October 25, 2024, was apprehended after a sustained three-month manhunt. The arrest comes after the NDLEA recovered a staggering 2,760 kilograms of skunk from his shrine in a major drug bust.
Femi Babafemi, spokesperson for the NDLEA, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, explaining that Aliu had been evading capture for months following the initial seizure.
“Two of his accomplices were arrested last year at the shrine and have since been charged and convicted in court. Bariu Aliu was the leader of the syndicate,” Babafemi stated.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in Lagos State.
