A medical doctor, Dr. Chukwuka Josiah Ikechukwu Nnamdi, has been arrested for allegedly fatally shooting an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operative, Halisu Sahabi, during a raid in Awka, Anambra State.

The suspect, a resident of Ifite, Awka, was apprehended by police and EFCC operatives while hiding in the ceiling of his neighbor’s home after the incident.

The tragic event occurred during an EFCC operation targeting suspected cybercriminals. The operatives had reportedly raided a property early Friday morning, arresting several individuals and confiscating items such as credit cards and luxury vehicles. The team then moved to another location where the shooting occurred.

According to police sources, the suspect initially refused to open his door, claiming he feared the operatives might be robbers. When the EFCC team broke into his apartment, Dr. Nnamdi allegedly opened fire, striking Halisu and injuring another operative.

Following the attack, the suspect reportedly disposed of the firearm, a short pump-action gun licensed to his father, by throwing it into nearby bushes. Police later recovered the weapon.

The EFCC operative, Halisu, succumbed to his injuries en route to a hospital after delays in accessing adequate medical care.

Dr. Nnamdi, who is now in custody, claims he acted in self-defense, but police sources indicate he may face murder charges.

Speaking on the incident, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest and recovery of the firearm. “Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details shall be communicated,” he said.

This development has sparked discussions about the safety protocols for law enforcement agencies during operations, with reports indicating the EFCC team lacked bulletproof vests during the raid.

Meanwhile, the late EFCC operative, an Assistant Superintendent of the Commission, has been buried in Sokoto State according to Islamic rites, with arrangements reportedly overseen by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for thorough investigations to ensure justice is served.
