Four individuals have been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command in connection with the gruesome murder of a 74-year-old wheelchair-bound woman in Abagana, Dunukofia Local Government Area. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday and has left the community in shock.
According to reports, the suspects set the elderly woman on fire and immediately procured a coffin to bury her remains. The prime suspect, identified as Ifeanyi Igwe, is currently at large, but his 21-year-old girlfriend, Chinenye Ekwenugo, and three other suspects—Uzochukwu Okeke (47), Fidel Anayo (60), and Ikenna Anene (54)—have been apprehended.
In a press release, the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrests and provided further details.
"The suspects were arrested on January 26, 2024, at 9 a.m. by operatives from the Abagana Divisional Police Headquarters," Ikenga stated. "During interrogation, Chinenye Ekwenugo confessed that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, along with three others, was responsible for setting the victim ablaze. They also procured a casket to bury her before the intervention of security operatives."
The motive behind the act is suspected to be ritualistic, though this remains under investigation. Efforts to apprehend the fugitive suspect, Ifeanyi Igwe, are ongoing. The deceased's body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Reacting to the incident, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, called for calm and reassured the public that justice would be served. He has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
This tragic event has sparked widespread outrage, with many in the community calling for stringent measures to address violent crimes and ritual killings in the region.
