Tragedy struck in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State when Awele Agatha Eluemunor, a final-year student at Delta State College of Nursing, Agbor, was fatally hit by an inexperienced driver.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, when a first-year student of the University of Delta (Unidel), under the guidance of her boyfriend, lost control of a vehicle while learning to drive on a busy road. The car swerved off course, hitting multiple pedestrians.
Awele, 23, who was eagerly anticipating her graduation in November 2025, died instantly at the scene. Two other victims sustained severe injuries and remain in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle owner, identified as the boyfriend of the learner driver, fled the scene immediately after the accident, abandoning the suspect.
Authorities arrested the young driver the following day. However, tensions escalated when she requested police permission to leave and write her examinations, sparking a protest by nursing students demanding justice for their late colleague.
Awele was laid to rest in her hometown of Ogwashi-Uku on Friday, February 21, as family, friends, and fellow students mourned her untimely passing.
