A telecommunications booster station belonging to MTN at the University of Ibadan was severely damaged by fire in the early hours of Saturday following an electrical surge.
The facility, located beside the Faculty of Nursing, was engulfed in flames around 4:00 a.m., affecting vital telecommunications equipment, including a Mikano electrical generator and control board.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, said that the agency responded swiftly alongside the university’s fire marshals to contain the blaze.
“Oyo State Fire Service’s prompt response helped douse the fire at the MTN booster station beside the Faculty of Nursing, University of Ibadan,” Akinyinka stated. “The fire was caused by an electrical surge, but our personnel, led by ACFS Olubunmi, worked alongside the university’s firefighters to bring the situation under control.”
No casualties were reported, but the extent of the damage is yet to be fully assessed. Authorities have urged telecommunications firms to strengthen safety measures at their installations to prevent future occurrences.
