A devastating fire swept through a storey building in Ibadan on Sunday, destroying property worth millions of naira and leaving residents and shop owners counting their losses.
The inferno, which broke out at No. 1 Shoyombo Street, Off Liberty Road, Oke-Ado, razed a ten-room residential structure along with three shops, including a hairdressing salon, a fashion design outlet, and a foodstuff store. Household goods and business equipment were completely destroyed in the blaze.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in a sitting room on the upper floor due to an electrical spark, which quickly spread to the rest of the building. Most of the residents were reportedly away at church when the incident occurred.
One of the affected tenants, Abosede Koleoso, a filling station attendant, recalled how she received a distress call while at work.
“I rushed home, but by the time I arrived, the fire had already consumed everything,” she said.
Another resident, Karim Akande, expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, though shop owners declined to comment as they mourned their losses.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, stated that firefighters were alerted at 10:34 a.m. and responded promptly.
“Upon arrival, we found the building engulfed in flames. Our team, led by ACFS Adedeji, managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures,” Akinyinka said.
He further attributed the cause of the fire to a high voltage surge following a power restoration. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
While the fire has been extinguished, affected residents and shop owners now face the difficult task of rebuilding their lives after the devastating loss.
