Fourteen Mourners Killed, Church And Homes Razed In Fresh Boko Haram Attack In Chibok

Tragedy struck the quiet village of Kwaple in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State on Monday evening, as suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly attack during a funeral ceremony, killing at least 14 mourners and injuring several others.

The attackers, who stormed the village around 6 p.m., disrupted a final prayer gathering for a deceased community member, opening fire on the mourners and setting a local church and more than ten homes ablaze, leaving devastation in their wake.

Confirming the assault, Chibok Council Chairman Hon. Modu Mustapha described the scene as harrowing. “They came while people were praying and unleashed terror,” he said. “Many injured victims were rushed to Mubi General Hospital in Adamawa, and search operations are still ongoing. The death toll could rise.”

The brutal incident came just hours after another deadly strike on the Gamboru Ngala–Kala Balge road, where an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by terrorists detonated under civilian vehicles, killing and injuring several passengers.

The wave of violence has raised fresh concerns about the security situation in the region, particularly in southern Borno, which continues to reel under sustained militant pressure.

Reacting to the spate of attacks, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, condemned the growing insecurity, calling the situation “pathetic and beyond human comprehension.”

In a statement, Ndume revealed that he received a distress call reporting the deaths of more than ten vigilante members in another assault between Hawul in Borno and Garkida in Adamawa.

“In just one month, over a hundred of my constituents have been massacred in coordinated attacks across communities like Sabon Gari, Pulka, Damboa, Izge, and Askira Uba,” Ndume lamented. “They are being killed without resistance, without confrontation.”

Mass burials are being planned in Kwaple for the victims of Monday’s massacre, even as the community and local authorities continue rescue efforts and await additional support from security forces.
