Tragedy struck Gbarantoru community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Thursday night, as two graduates of Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, were brutally murdered in a suspected cult-related attack.

The victims, identified as Ayaokpo Sinclair from Tombia community and another known simply as Rex, were reportedly awaiting their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letters when they were ambushed and hacked to death around 11 p.m.

According to Mr. Tolummbofa Jonathan, the Commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria in Bayelsa State, the young men had stepped out in the evening to make a purchase when a vehicle carrying suspected cultists stormed the community.

“They arrived shouting ‘See them! See them!’ and began chanting ‘aye, aye’, which we recognise as a cult slogan. Immediately after, they attacked the two boys with machetes,” Jonathan explained.

He revealed that while one of the victims tried to escape by diving into a nearby creek, he later succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by a relative—who was allegedly the driver of the assailants’ vehicle—to save him. The cultists returned and overpowered the driver when they spotted the victim with him, inflicting further injuries until he lost consciousness.

“We tried to revive him by rushing him to the community health centre for first aid, but unfortunately, he died there. The police were then contacted and the bodies were deposited in the morgue,” Jonathan added.

The Bayelsa State Police Command has since launched an investigation into the killings. Police spokesperson, Mr. Musa Mohammed, confirmed the arrest of the vehicle’s driver and assured that the State Criminal Investigation Department is actively pursuing the other fleeing suspects.

He said, “We have arrested some suspects connected to the killing, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the others involved in this heinous crime.”

The incident has left the community in mourning, with calls for intensified security patrols and a crackdown on cult violence in the state.
