A unit leader of the Yoruba group, Odua People’s Congress, identified simply as Jide, has gone underground after allegedly killing his girlfriend for talking to another man.
PUNCH METRO gathered that, Jide, who works as a night guard at Ogunsolu Street, near Cement Bus Stop end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, identified simply as Simiat, a teenager, with a locally-made riffle, after the girl could not give a satisfactory answer on what she was doing with another man earlier that day.
Residents of the area told our correspondent that Jide pointed his gun at Simiat’s right Bosom and pulled the trigger. “The girl died on the spot and Jide managed to escape because we initially thought armed robbers were operating,” a resident, who did not want his name to be mentioned for safety reason, said.
It was learnt that before Saturday, Jide and Simiat were lovebirds and they usually met every night when Jide reported for duty.
Another resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, said that on the fateful day, Jide came earlier than usual and saw Simiat with an unidentified man having an intimate chat.
“What probably made Jide angry was the fact that Simiat completely ignored him. Jide also pretended that he was not bothered and left the area, only for him to come back later and killed the girl,” the resident said.
But Simiat’s friend and co-worker at a bar in the area told PUNCH METRO that Simiat and Jide were never lovers.
The lady, who refused to disclose her identity, said that Jide was wooing Simiat and the deceased had not given her consent before she was killed by the suspect.
She said, “That was what made the situation to degenerate because when Jide came here he started banging on the gate. Simiat came out but refused to open the gate to allow him in. After Jide accused her of talking to another man, she got angry and told him that they were not lovers and he should stop trailing her.
“Shortly, they started shouting at each other and before anyone realised what was happening, Jide pointed his gun through the gate and shot Simiat on the right Bosom . When he realised that Simiat was dead, he ran away. We have not seen him since then.”
The owner of the bar declined to speak with our correspondent on the incident. “This is a tragedy. I am waiting for her parents so that we can go back to the police to see what they are doing on the matter,” she said.
The spokesman of Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, confirmed the killing of Simiat. He said policemen from Dopemu Police Station, where the case was reported, had deposited her remains at the General Hospital, Isolo.
“We have commenced investigation on the case. We hope to apprehend the suspect, Jide, soon,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources at the state Criminal Investigation Division, Musiliu Street, Yaba, told our correspondent that other OPC leaders in the area had been arrested by the police in a bid to get Jide.

Why should they arrest another man for a crime committed by someone else? They should release the innocent man and find their way of arresting suspect.
