PUNCH METRO gathered that sometimes last year, the Baale (village head) of Maya Ajegunle Community, Ikorodu, ordered that anybody with a virgin land in the community should consult with him for proper scrutiny and verification of their plots of land before developing them.
However, a man identified simply as Musediq, who bought a piece of land from the families of the accused and Akanbi’s, consulted with the baale and got approval to continue with his ongoing building construction.
It was learnt that both Kazeem and Akanbi stormed Musediq’s site and accused him of defying the baale’s order. They allegedly demanded the sum of N40,000 from Musediq before they could allow him to continue with his building construction.
Musediq, who claimed to have earlier given the duo N40,000 during the laying of the foundation and another N80,000 during the roofing construction, explained to them that he had already consulted with the village head and urged them to reduce the amount.
Kazeem and Akanbi were said to have left the site in annoyance but later came back with a man identified simply as Oduyeba and two others suspected to be members of a vigilance group in the area.
PUNCH METRO learnt that the suspects and members of the vigilance group, who were armed with cutlasses and other weapons, chased Musediq and his workers away from the site.
During the fracas, Kazeem was said to have unknowingly hit Akanbi with a cutlass. The victim later died in a hospital.
The charge sheet reads in part, “that you Nofiu Kazeem on the 15th day of February, 2011, at 11am at Maya Ajegunle, Ikorudu, Lagos, did unlawfully kill one Jamiu Akanbi ‘male’ with a cutlass and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap C-17,Vol.II, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.’’
The Magistrate, Mr. Tubosun Abolarinwa, who stood in for the magistrate of Court 8, Mr. O.O Olatunji, did not take the plea of the accused.
He berated land speculators, who demanded money at every stage of construction, despite having completed the terms of sale of such land.
He ordered Kazeem to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till May 30.
