President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the post -election crisis that engulfed some states in Northern Nigeria saying that the perpetrators will be punished.

Mr. Jonathan said this in a broadcast early Thursday morning adding that the violence that has led to the death of many people and destruction of public infrastructure is undermining the success of the ongoing general elections.

“My fellow countrymen and women, enough is enough,” the President declared.

Riots broke out on Sunday and Monday in several cities in Northern Nigeria as traditional rulers and leading politicians’ homes were targeted in the turbulence that left many dead and others injured. The revolt was sparked by the victory of Mr. Jonathan over the local favourite, Muhammadu Buhari, a retired army general and former military head of state.

“Sadly, some misguided elements do not share in the spirit of our democratic achievements. They formed into groups of miscreants; and struck with deadly and destructive force in some parts of the country. They killed and maimed innocent citizens. They set ablaze business premises, private homes and even places of worship. In some cases, they showed utter disrespect to all forms of authority, including our most revered traditional institutions. They singled out and harassed nationalistic politicians. They intimidated travellers,” Mr. Jonathan added.

Mr. Jonathan concluded that the violence has gone beyond, ‘mere political protests.’
