A middle-aged man yesterday lost his life in early morning fatal road accident allegedly caused by the convoy of the Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji at the front of Ahiara Motor Park along Owerri Umuahia Road, Imo State.
When Daily Sun visited the scene of the accident it was learnt that the victim was in company with three other occupants in a Toyota Corolla car AJ 984 KEY and were reportedly travelling to Umuahia, Abia State for a marriage rites when the governor’s convoy suspected to be going to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo International Airport, Owerri ran the car out of the road.
It was gathered that the occupants of the Toyota car who were natives of Amiri Community in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State were trying to overtake a truck load of drinks when the driver suddenly sighted the governor’s convoy.
In a bid to avoid head-on collusion with the convoy, the victim’s car ran in-between two trucks in front of it and squeezed beyond recognition.
The two lorries with registration numbers KC743 UKA and Ondo XC287AKR were towed away by members of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) while the injured persons were taken to a private hospital, Adeniyi Clinic, Mbaise. The corpse had been deposited at Ogbonguru Hospital Mortuary Mbaise.
When Daily Sun visited the hospital, a victim identified as Izunna Chijioke from Amari village, Oru East who claimed to be one of the sons of the dead man kept asking the whereabouts of his late father. Items recovered from their vehicle include, yams, kolanuts, fowls, hens and alligator pepper.
A Special Marshal Coordinator of the FRSC in charge of Mbaise zone, Chief John Osuagwu cautioned state governors’ drivers against over speeding on the roads particularly on narrow highways.
Osuagwu, who is also the chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Mbaise urged the Federal Government to complete the dualization of Owerri-Umuahia Road that has been under construction for some time now describing the road as a death trap.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Abia State Governor, Mr. Kingsley Emeruwa dismissed the allegation claiming that the convoy could not have belonged to his boss since he (governor) was currently resting in the United States and was expected back to the country on Thursday this week.
