A property belonging to the former Chief Whip of the Senate and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Rowland Owie, was yesterday, demolished by the Edo State Government.

A member of the task force on the Demolition of Illegal Structures, told newsmen that the building was blocking the moat, adding that the task force decided to embarked on the exercise so as to open up the moats to tackle the flooding problem being experienced by residents of Benin City.

But the Personal Assistant to the senator, Dr john Oboigbator, described the claim as untrue, asserting that the building which contains a four flat apartment, located off Textile Mill Road was not along the moat, recalling that his boss had earlier met with the Chairman of the Task Force, Major Lawrence Oloye, on the issue and it was resolved amicably.

He said: “So that is why we are still in shock to find out that this place has been demolished. There are houses here that are even closer to the moat but they were not demolished.  The house is not on the moat. Senator had even informed some ACN chieftains before now about the matter and they said they will intervene. It is very clear that the house is not by the moat. So this is sad.”

Efforts made to reach Senator Owie proved abortive as he was said to be out of the country. It would be recalled that Senator Owie, a founding member of the ACN had last year dumped the ACN for the PDP.
