Robin van Persie 'very proud' to reach 100 Arsenal goals after scoring twice in win over Bolton Wanderers.

The Gunners striker is delighted to become the 17th player in the Gunners' history to reach the milestone for the club, while manager Arsene Wenger hails his new captain.

The Dutchman scored his 99th and 100th goals for the Gunners to put Arsenal 2-0 up before Alex Song sealed the win, putting last week's dramatic 4-3 defeat to Blackburn Rovers behind them.

He told reporters: "I'm very proud. I'm only the 17th player in the history of Arsenal players to pass 100 goals. It is a big achievement."

The striker added: "The fans were amazing again. It has been hard for them and us but we can move forward now.

"You could see everyone smiling after, saying 'this is what we want'."

The 28-year-old was signed from Feyenoord in 2004 as a hugely promising but temperamental forward for the sum of £2.75 million after his relationship with coach Bert van Marwijk deteriorated.

Arsene Wenger went on to convert the versatile left-footed forward from playing predominantly on the wing to a central striker, as he famously did with Thierry Henry.

The manager was not lost on the importance of his new captain following the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, commenting in light of his frequent absence from injury over the years.

"It's difficult to imagine our team without him. Let's hope, touch wood, that he remains with us in every single game," Wenger said.

"To score 100 goals at the top level is very, very difficult. In 2011 Robin has scored 26 goals in 31 goals. That's absolutely magic."
