Students of no fewer than 328 schools in Ebonyi state may have their education threatened as a result of government closure of their schools. The closure followed a committee’s report that rendered them unworthy to function due to poor facilities, while 144 others were given six months to shape in or risk outright closure.
The order for their closure was a fallout of the state executive council meeting held yesterday where parents of the affected students were advised to look for an alternative schools for their enrollment and directed the Commissioner for Education, Barr. Ndubuisi Agbo, to give the affected schools six months ultimatum to improve or risk outright closure at the expiration of the deadline.
Government’s decision according to the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Chike Onwe said the measure was not to discourage private sector participation in the development of education in Ebonyi rather a measure taken to ensure conformity with set standard. He frowned at the inability of the contractors handling the fencing projects of the 27 pilot schools to complete them in accordance with the terms of the contracts and issued a 10-day ultimatum to get them back on track or risk their termination.
Just as he disclosed that 13 general hospitals, one in each local government area, would be renovated to make them functional and conducive environment for healthcare delivery. As a result, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sunday Nwangele, was directed to articulate the requirements for award of contracts intended to span a period of 18 months.
Worried about the environment of the state capital, Abakaliki, the council ordered the Ministry of Environment to find an alternative location for vulcanizers and other roadside artisans as a necessary step in the process of improving the aesthetics of the state capital.
