Cardiff City — Vincent Tan, Malaysia

VIN BONUS ... it's a red-letter day for Tan as Cardiff seal promotionTAN sparked fan fury when he switched City’s traditional blue kit in 2012 — due to a superstition in his native Malaysia.

Chelsea — Roman Abramovich, Russia

Liverpool — John W Henry, USA

TOP OF THE KOPS ... Henry, right, watches on with wife Linda PizzutiYANK Henry, head of the Fenway Sports Group, is another mogul with teams both sides of the pond.
The Liverpool owner is also in charge of the Boston Red Sox and took control from Anfield’s hated Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett in 2010.

70  Forum / The Buzz Central / Popular Lagos Reverend Arrested and Detained For Fraud on: 16-07-2013 08:25 AM

A popular Lagos-based pastor, known as Rev. Praise Bassey, has been arrested by the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for duping a female contractor. Reverend
“Bassey told the contractor that the cost of the car was N3m. She was to pay the amount into his Zenith bank account. After the money was paid, Bassey became evasive.”
Read more shocking revelation after cut:

Bassey, who runs his church, Household of Destiny, from his three-bedroom apartment at Gani Dabiri Street, Ajao Estate, was said to have collected the money in 2010 under the guise of buying the contractor a 1X35 Hyundai car.

A police source told Punch that matters came to a head when Bassey, on collecting the money, could neither provide the car nor refund the money for two years.

He said, “The contractor got to know Bassey in 2010 when he visited her home in the company with a family friend. I learnt that Bassey informed the contractor that he lived in Korea and was into car import business.”

Several months later, the contractor called to ask Bassey the price of a 1X35 Huyundai jeep.

The petition, which was referred to the SCID through the Lagos State Commissioner, led to Bassey’s arrest.

Somehow, Rev. Bassey was able to secure bail the same day he was arrested in 2012.

He was said to have informed the police that the money was not given to him to buy a car, but to pray for the contractor’s success in her business. He was later given bail after he promised to refund the money.

“Part of his bail conditions was that Bassey would refund the money. At first, he paid N1.25m and promised to pay the remaining N1.75m. After securing his bail, Bassey absconded.”

He was rearrested by SCID operatives who were on his trail for many weeks.

From what .com gathered, Rev Bassey is now being processed for prosecution in court.

72  Forum / Politics / What Happens If This Man Who Was Hit With A Mace Dies? on: 16-07-2013 07:55 AM
The political crisis in Rivers State has reached a frightening height. Last week’s free-for-all by members of the state House of Assembly was not only shameful but scary. The result of that show of shame was that a member of the House, Honourable (if any of them still deserves that appellation) Michael Chinda was flown abroad for medical treatment as a result of the injuries he sustained.

He was reported to have slipped in and out of coma...
Chinda, one of the lawmakers against Governor Chibuike Amaechi, was seen on TV being pummelled viciously with the mace of the House by a colleague, Chidi Lloyd, said to be loyal to the Amaechi camp. Wearing a white caftan and a red cap, Lloyd was seen repeatedly hitting him with a mace, while a man dressed in police uniform was seen lending him a hand.

In another scene of that national embarrassment, Evans Bipi, purported to have been bizarrely “elected” as the new Speaker by five members in a House of 32 members, was seen outside the chamber felling a man with a punch. By the time the fracas was over, the legislative chamber was not just a shambles, the floor and walls were painted in blood.

Legislators in most parts of the world are known for occasionally resorting to fights during heated debates. The reason is simple: Legislators are equals, elected by their respective constituencies to represent their interests, with the members electing one of their colleagues to preside over their deliberations as the Speaker or President, who is not their boss but just a first among equals. Therefore, at times of crisis, even though the legislature has a leader and other officers who maintain order, it is difficult to control members.

The situation is worsened by the fact that police officers are not usually allowed to come into the House to maintain peace when there is a crisis. Legislators always believe that since they are an independent arm of government, they should be allowed to settle their issues their own way without any interference from the executive arm of government whom they are meant to make laws for and have oversight powers over.

Therefore, even when they fight and injure one another or destroy things in the House, none of them is usually arrested. It is seen as their internal matter. If there is a need to penalise erring members, the House uses its internal mechanism to mete out such penalties without the interference of the police or law courts.

However, will it still be regarded as an internal matter if a member of a House uses a weapon on another member that causes death? It is not likely that such will be treated as an internal legislative matter. The only time I can recall when a Nigerian legislator died during a fracas in the House was on October 17, 2007 during the crisis that led to the resignation of Mrs. Patricia Etteh as Speaker of the House of Representatives. But fortunately, the deceased, Dr Aminu Safana, did not die as a result of physical contact or injury: it was reported that his blood pressure shot up during the row and he was rushed to the hospital where he died.

The Rivers State crisis has been allowed to fester like a bad sore for too long. Interestingly, both Amaechi and Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of State for Education, who is fingered to be fronting for President Goodluck Jonathan in the crisis, both claim to be the victim. The loser is governance which is either abandoned or neglected while the crisis goes on.

But there is enough blame to go round all the actors in this crisis. Some point at the removal of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area as the root of the crisis, while some point at the clash of political interest between Jonathan and Amaechi over the 2015 elections as the root of the crisis. Jonathan with his wife has repeatedly washed his hands off the crisis, but it will be very difficult to convince most Nigerians that he has no hand in it. He has a right to protect his interest and work against the interest of anyone who is plotting against his. But a line needs to be drawn between politics and intimidation. The more this crisis lingers, the more it hurts Jonathan’s image. It is therefore in his interest that he gets it resolved fast.

On his part, Amaechi has every right to seek to be President or Vice-President in 2015 against the ambition of the incumbent. Even if he has no political ambition of his own for 2015, he has a right not to support Jonathan’s ambition. But he should not be applauded for working against the political interest of his party man. He still has two years to govern Rivers State, but he seems to be paying more attention to this crisis than the job for which he was elected. Secondly, one of the problems in Rivers State that has worsened this crisis is the removal of the Chairman of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Amaechi has smartly been insisting that it was the House of Assembly that removed the chairman. But he is merely trying to be smart by half, for it is clear that the action of the House was like the biblical hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob. The state House of Assembly has not hidden the fact that it is a puppet of the governor. Amaechi should therefore stop hiding behind the House. Just as he is complaining about the Presidency oppressing him for his contrary views, he should also stop oppressing the Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA for his contrary views. It is said that he who comes into equity must come with clean hands.

In addition, going to the House with his security aides on the day of the crisis showed how meddlesome he is in the affairs of the House. He represents the executive arm of government, while the House represents the legislative arm, with the judiciary completing the tripod. The governor had no business going there. All reports received on the matter as well as the video evidence showed that his going to the House helped to aggravate the crisis.

The third party to this crisis is Wike. It is shameful that at a time the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Academic Staff Union of Universities are both on a strike action, the Minister of State for Education is more concerned about power tussle in his home state. His choice of words, as well as his tone, mien and body language any time he speaks on the crisis or Amaechi usually lack decorum. He needs to carry himself with more dignity in line with his office.

Similarly, the anti-Amaechi lawmakers were reckless in their purported impeachment of the Speaker. Five members cannot impeach or elect a Speaker in a House of 32 legislators. We only witnessed such a mockery of democracy during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure when the Mallam Nuhu Ribadu-led Economic and Financial Crimes Commission used state legislators in such a manner to remove governors, whom the law courts subsequently returned to office.

Also, the police have been accused by Amaechi of being partisan in the crisis, a claim the state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu, has denied. If indeed the police are biased, it is unjustifiable. Even though the police are run by the Federal Government, they are not meant to be biased, especially against the state governor, who is identified as the number one security officer of his state.

Finally, the country’s image has been battered by many acts of public and private individuals. Engaging in a crisis of personal interest at a time the nation is crying out for more attention is synonymous with the story of Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

73  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Dear Gistmania readers: Is it okay for a woman to propose to a man? on: 16-07-2013 07:53 AM

From a female gistmania reader
gistmania guys, Could you please ask your followers if they believe it is okay for a woman to propose to a man. The reason I am asking this is that today I and my cousin were watching the reality TV show Love and Hip Hop and one of the ladies on the show proposed to her love interest. My cousin then said ''she has no self respect''. I was rather shocked because my cousin is female and I did not expect this from her. My point is that, it is the 21st century. I do appreciate that not everyone and even some females do not believe in gender equality but I just want to understand why this is such a big deal.

74  Forum / The Buzz Central / I'm A Wife Material --Single & Searching Actress Dayo Amusa on: 16-07-2013 07:49 AM

Bold and busty Yoruba actress, Dayo Amusa is one of the many hot babes in the movie industry who seem to be having a hard time getting into the marriage institution, even as her age is increasing. Below is what she said about her desire to get married:

So when should we expect the wedding bell?

Very soon because I stand firm on the Lords time for me. I am not in haste to tie the nuptial but when the time is ripe for me, nothing can stop it. I love kids and I hope to raise mine soon.

What do look out for in your dream man?

First and foremost, nobody is perfect so I am not looking for a perfect man rather; I want a man who will understand me and my job. A man who can’t be intimated irrespective of my status in the society, I appreciate a man who can differentiate me from what I do. I bet you I am a wife material and a typical African lady to the core.

75  Forum / The Buzz Central / TB Joshua Says "I SEE REVOLUTION COMING" on: 16-07-2013 07:47 AM

Popular Nigerian tele-evangelist Pastor T.B. Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Sunday carried on with his message for job creation with a call to include the youth in decision-making positions or risk mass unrest that could spell serious doom.

The prophet, speaking during a live service broadcast on his Emmanuel TV, said:
“I am seeing a revolution. I am seeing people take to the street. At the beginning of that protest, it might be stopped. Eventually, it will become so big that it cannot be stopped.”

In the message entitled ‘Carry Your Youth Along’ the prophet, however, said there was a way out and cited job creation for the youth and the creation of a new social value system.

This, he said, was because 90 percent of the youth have come to believe that it was by becoming political thugs that they could be successful, especially because those in the political offices do not want to retire and become statesmen.

He also said the youth should be considered for inclusion in all sectors of the economy as they seem to be more educated than their elders because they are exposed to modern technology.

“The youth, no matter the education they have, feel they have no place in politics and there is no job to keep them busy. There must be new orientation,” said T.B Joshua who has in recent weeks taken job creation as a pilot project of his ministry.

In an indirect chastisement of political leaders who cling to power, the Lagos-based cleric said it was time the youth were considered for important positions such as assistants to the elders.

Said he: “While the elders are ministers, the youth could be junior ministers. This little example of being junior ministers can change the situation of things. Tell your presidents - in every department of government or politics, the youth should be junior assistants to the heads of such departments.”

By doing this, he said, the youth would be groomed to take over tomorrow because they are leaders of tomorrow.

“This is a message to the whole world. This is because revolution is a weapon of change that is coming. This is the vision I saw. Revolution is coming when people will take to the street because life has no value anymore to the people out there.

“Any nation that will start it now, will avert the coming revolution. Carry your youth along in your politics and administration especially in ruling your country. I have said it; none of these will go without being fulfilled,” said the pastor who lamented that his messages right from the beginning of his ministry were never believed until they came to pass.

Among some of his predictions that came true were the revolution in Egypt, death of former Malawi president Bingu wa Mutharika and recently, the derailing of the train in a french-speaking country, just to name a few.

According to the prophet, if the youth are carried along, whenever there is a revolt or situation they will be available to readily speak to their colleagues and peace will be maintained. “The youth want to see themselves represented in every area of life,” he said.

The pastor who has often been accused of being a prophet of doom for his hard-to-swallow predictions, was quick to warn his world viewers, saying he only speaks what God tells him.

“Those who cry peace to us, prophesy nothing but smooth things. Those who cry peace to you, victory be to you, all is well, unlimited favour, prophesy nothing but smooth things. As surely as God lives, I [T.B. Joshua] will tell you only what God says. If I am hated, persecuted and intimidated because of my accurate prophetic utterances - Blessed be to God who gives the prophecy!”
