6601  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Rain Causes Havoc In Lagos And Ogun States As Buildings And Other Properties Were Destroyed on: 21-05-2019 11:58 AM

A downpour that lasted  about two hours, on Monday, wreaked havoc on different parts of Lagos and Ogun states, destroying property and telecommunications infrastructure, and uprooting trees.
Many residents of the two states could not go about their daily businesses as a result of flood that accompanied the heavy rainfall.
The downpour, which began around 9.30am, forced many residents to stay indoors, while others, who took the risk to leave their houses, got stuck in traffic and at various bus stops.
PUNCH Metro learnt that two buildings partially collapsed in the Abule Egba and Ladipo areas of Lagos, while trees fell on roads and vehicles in different parts of Lagos and Ogun states.
Our correspondents learnt that the roofs of several buildings, including those of two classrooms at a primary school in the Ayede area of Ogun State, were blown off by the rainstorm.
A source, who spoke to one of Punch correspondents on condition of anonymity, stated that the incident destabilised the pupils.
She said,
Quote
“The rain affected two classrooms in one of the buildings in the school and the pupils were unable to carry on with their studies, because the classrooms were flooded.
“The roof of the building was just fixed by the school management after several complaints to the state government. We reported the case last year when the roof was leaking, but the government did nothing until the management raised money to fix it and now the rain has spoilt it again. We hope that the incoming governor will help us to fix it and do more in the education sector.”

Another victim of the downpour, who identified himself simply as Johnson, stated, “The strong wind that accompanied the rain destroyed a billboard around the Sango tollgate area and blew off the roofs of six houses.
“The rain also destroyed some kiosks around the Singer bus stop, Ijako, Ogun State.
“There was traffic at the Iyana Ilogbo area of the state because of the water that filled the potholes, which Julius Berger refused to fix, and this caused drivers to drive slowly, which resulted in heavy traffic.
“Some electric poles fell in the Ifo area of the state, which will make some areas not to have power supply.”
A businessman in the Ikeja area of Lagos, Longimus Onye, who lamented the delay in displaying his wares because of the rain, expressed optimism of making a profit for the day.
“Because of the rain, I could not display my wares on time but I hope people will still come out and buy, but I want to urge the government to fill the potholes on the road from Agege to Ikeja in order to reduce the traffic problem,” he said.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Adesina Tiamiyu, confirmed the partial collapse of some buildings as well as trees being uprooted due to the rainfall.
He, however, noted that no life was lost.
Tiamiyu stated,
Quote
“What we had around Lagos today (Monday) were the wreckages of the heavy rain and windstorm. We had trees falling all over the place in Ikoyi, Alausa, Ikeja GRA and some part of Agege Motor Road, and we sent out our team together with the Lagos State Parks and Gardens officials to cut them into pieces and pack them off the road.
“We also had records of accidents caused by low visibility, but no life was lost in all the occurrences.”

According to the Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Sanusi Abdulateef, the rainy season comes with a lot of emergencies similar to what happened on Monday, adding that officials of the agency were on top of the situation to restore normalcy in the affected areas.

He said,
Quote
“We have been up and doing since morning, because we had envisaged this kind of problem, and what we did was to divide the state into six regions. Each region is being managed by an emergency team.
“If you look around now, 80 per cent of the trees have been removed from the roads to put an end to the gridlock. Where we have not been able to evacuate the trees, we have put them away from the roads.
“The rainy season is accompanied by windstorm and once there is windstorm, it comes with a lot of emergencies like fallen trees and slashing of tree branches. We are on top of the situation and we are still on the road monitoring the activities of our operators. We have done it in Ogba, Victoria Island, Ikoyi and other places; by noon tomorrow (Tuesday), everything must have been evacuated from the roads.”

The state government, in a statement jointly signed by the Permanent Secretaries, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Fola Adeyemi, and Ministry of the Environment, Abiodun Bamgboye, urged Lagos residents to remain calm, adding that Monday’s experience was as a result of climate change.
The statement read in part, “Sometimes when it rains, we are likely to have flash-floods on our roads as it sometimes happens in other parts of the world, but the relief here is that the flash-floods will disappear in a couple of hours.

Quote
“We want to assure Lagosians that relevant government agencies like the Drainage Services Department, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency have been put on red alert to adequately respond to any unforeseen occurrence during rain of high intensity as well as cart away fallen trees, electricity poles and confront other emergencies during the rain.
“Similarly, the Lagos State Public Works Corporation is already on the ground to clean the drainage channels, drainage setbacks and other road debris.”

According to a report by Vanguard, the residents of Benin Kingdom, Edo State Capital, were weekend stunned to see traditional priests and priestesses of different deities, native doctors, Ewuaise palace society and different ancient traditional worshippers including Olokun and Ovia priestesses in their regalia parading some major streets.
Their mission was to invoke age-long traditional practice of cleansing the land and appeasing the gods following the upsurge in cases of killings occasioned by armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping, sacrilegious acts and the seeming inability of security agencies to stem the tide.
The different traditional worshippers, native doctors and priests in their hundreds besieged the ancient Urhokpota ground in red attires with different traditional instruments of war and unanimously heaped disastrous curses on those committing sacrilege in the land and throne of the kingdom.
According to the native doctors and traditional priests, the curses were also targeted at traditions’ violators, sponsors of cultism, kidnappings and other heinous crimes in the kingdom.
Shortly after the slaughtering of animals and offering of sacrificial materials to ancestors, the various groups took turns to pray and lay curses on those violating the law of the land.
The groups, thereafter, had a precession to strategic places in the town including Sokponba Road, Kings Square, Murtala Mohammed Way, Igbesamwan Street, Akpakpava Road and ended at Emotan Shrine on Oba Market Road. The exercise was presided by the Ewaise Group headed by Chief Eguezigbon and Chief Ohen-Egie of Ogbeson.

The Ogun state police command have arrested a 52-year old man, Tayo Ogunmola, over an attempt to defraud the state’s Commissioner of Police Bashir Makama.
A statement released by the command’s public relations officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, says that the arrest of the suspect followed a phone call he made to the police commissioner, pretending to be an old herbalist who mistakenly sent a recharge card pin to the telephone number of the CP pleading for the pin to be sent back to him.
Makama who is familiar with the antics of the fraudsters decided to play along with him while he sent men of the Intelligence Response Team to technically track and apprehend the suspect.
At a stage, the suspect who was not aware that he is being trailed, presented himself as a commissioner of police, a deputy Inspector general of Police, ready to assist Makama only if he can part with a certain amount of money not knowing that the person he’s been discussing with is a serving commissioner of police.
Luck however ran out on him when he was traced to his hideout at Araromi phase 11 in Ilogbo area of Ota where he was promptly arrested.
On interrogation, he confessed being a fraudster who had defrauded many unsuspecting members of the public of money running into millions of Naira out of which he built the house he is living in.
Makama has ordered the monitoring team to properly investigate the suspect with the view of arresting his other accomplices and arraign them before a court of competent jurisdiction.

6614  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Vid+Photos: The Story Of A UNILAG Mathematics Lecturer Who Bagged His PhD After 25 Years on: 20-05-2019 11:22 AM

Every doctoral voyage has its own length, most, with the lowering of the mast and the conferring of the cap lasting two or three years after.
For Dr. Adetunji Adeniyan, a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Lagos, his journey with sums and equations took an unlikely route, lasting 25 years!

In The Beginning
Dr. Adeniyan said: "I went to school in the village, it was in the Western region at Ikire, a few kilometres to Ibadan...I was a very good lover of mathematics.

"In those days there used to be elementary mathematics and additional mathematics, we weren't much who took the course but I stood out and did very well in it so my background in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology became very sound" he said.
The lecturer who has always been a keen lover of mathematics and a prestigious student never foresaw the problems that will hinder his progress and had logically concluded that he would have his qualifications in.
"My late uncle, he was a lawyer and I used to live with him in Ikoyi. He wanted me to study engineering but I opted for mathematics against his wish. He was worried that I will end up just teaching"
Despite stern warning from his uncle he said, "I  went for an interview to get a banking job and at the same time, the University of Lagos was recruiting and they offered me a job as a graduate assistant."

Then Things Fell Apart

In 1983, after completing his masters, he proceeded to obtain a doctorate degree.
When his supervisor, Prof. Bachir, an Indian, made a decision to leave the country due to a deteriorating economic system.
A rapid decision it was as it deterred Dr. Adetunji from his almost concluded doctorate program.
He had showed keen interest in plasma dynamics or magneto hydro-dynamics in the area of applied mathematics and Prof. Bachir was the only lecturer in that capacity.
After his supervisor left, there was no one to fill in his position.
However, Prof. Bachir was willing to see to the end of Dr. Adetunji’s work.
He therefore sent a letter to the institution to make provisions for Dr. Adetunji to join him overseas so he can complete his program.
He further added that he would be given free accommodation and an office space to occupy as a lecturer, all the institution needed to do was to get him funds to travel. The university on the other hand, claimed to be broke and could not send him there.
With his supervisor and several other white lecturers gone, Dr. Adetunji and few other lecturers available were left to teach rather voluminous classes.
As a disciplined and hardworking lecturer, Dr. Adetunji did not brook idleness as he would always saddle his students, who were about three thousand, with several assignments and he will solely do the job of grading all of their papers.
The university did later assign an assistant to help him out but this, coupled with the fact that he had no supervisor, made it impossible for him to complete his program till it was terminated in 1989.

Following the termination of his program, his colleagues, Prof. H.N Odogwu and Dr. Mrs. Ogbonna, who were also faced with the problem of a supervisor, switched to other  field and went abroad to continue respectively.
Dr. Adetunji was apparently faced with a choice to opt for other fields whose supervisors were readily available but his tenacity to continue in a desired field of interest and lack of funding to seize opportunities outside the country kept him precluded him.
Afterwards, he decided to go into the school transport system in order to augment his  salary.
This growing small scale business occupied his time till he was able to reapply for his PhD degree in 1998/1999. He was not ready to allow unfavourable circumstances to hinder him from achieving his goals and was even more focused and determined.
Good Things To All Who Wait
He worked relentlessly again without a supervisor and not until 2010 before his PhD program success began.
While his initial unsupervised thesis was ready as at that time, he only had to revisit it when he met Prof. Daniel Makinde who came from South Africa to give a lecture at the institution. During the lecture, he spotted Dr.Adetunji’s intelligent response amidst the larger audience.
He met with him afterwards and was appalled that such an intelligent individual had been spending years chasing a degree he was way qualified for.
Having understood the barriers, he gave Dr. Adetunji thirty-six articles to read and convinced him to change to his own field which was quite similar to what he (Dr. Adetunji) wanted.
He adhered to the advice and with this, he progressively moved. Officially, his thesis was submitted in August 2016.
He graduated and was given a honourary award as the longest serving lecturer in the university.
