Security in and around Benin, the capital of Edo state has been beefed up by the state police command as President Goodluck Jonathan visits the ancient city.

The President is in Benin for the campaign rally of the PDP gubernatorial candidate, Maj.-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (rtd).

Security agents were sighted at strategic positions in the city as early as 7 a.m. Police patrol vans were seen dropping off Mobile and regular Police Officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at locations in town.

Jonathan, accompanied by the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, will visit the palace of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa, before proceeding to the Stadium for the campaign.

Airhiavbere is expected to contest the governorship election along with six other candidates, including incumbent Governor Adams Oshiomhole of the AC.

Others are Chief Solomon Edebiri of All Nigeria Peoples Party, Roland Izeobuwe of CPC, Charles Igwemoh of Labour Party, Paul Orunmwese of National Conscience Party and Frank Ukoya of Social Democratic Mega Party.

The state government also announced that it had relaxed the restriction of movement for the monthly environmental sanitation, but urged the residents to endeavour to clean up their environment.

The incumbent governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole, had on Friday accused the opposition party of a ploy to assasinate him, a claim that the state police have termed untrue.
