Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins yesterday attacked the second-in-command to Ezeigbo Gburugburu, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka in his home, Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Daily Sun gathered that the gunmen trailed Ezeonwuka from his Rojenny Tourist village, Oba to his residence at about 9.30p.m. and started shooting sporadically into the air.
The gunmen stormed Ezeonwuka’s residence after laying ambush for several hours. By the time their target finally appeared, they tried to kill him. It was further gathered that the deputy Igbo leader and the Ogirishi Ndigbo had earlier presided over security meeting with all security agencies and members of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) before the attack.
Narrating his ordeal, Ezeonwuka said his attackers were dressed in Mobile Police uniforms with bulletproof vests apparently to deceive people. He disclosed that the armed men tried to shoot him when he jumped the fence and ran away when they tried to kidnap his son who also jumped through the fence. Also speaking, the MASSOB Director of Information, Uchenna Madu said the attack on Ezeonwuka was coming barely some hours MASSOB arrested an armed robbery suspect along Onitsha-Owerri Road.
Madu further said MASSOB security had arrested a member of a notorious armed robbery gang that specialised in dispossessing motorists of their cash and other valuables. He said luck ran out on the suspect after his gang had successfully robbed a businessman along Oba Old Road Junction and tried to escape but was arrested while other members escaped.
The MASSOB spokesman said the suspect had been handed over to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigation.
