Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, said on Monday that the state government would introduce Mandarin, or Chinese language, in public schools’ curriculum as from next session.
Oladunjoye said this in a statement signed by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Lanre Bajulaiye, and made newsmen
The commissioner said this after a meeting with the delegation from the Chinese Confucius Institute, University of Lagos.
She said that learning the language in the state’s public schools would be an opportunity for the pupils and students to speak the language and be able to adapt to the Chinese culture.
Prof. Caleb Orimoogunje, Director of the Institute, said the institution was ready to assist the state with necessary logistics to make the teaching and learning of the language easier.
Orimoogunje added that Prof. Lirong Jiang, a co-director of the institute, would help in the take-off of the programme.
Jiang said the institute, as a representative of the Chinese culture in Nigeria, was set up to satisfy people’s need about the country’s culture.
She noted that the language became necessary because China had become the new destination for economic growth and technological development.
“The Institute is prepared to provide Chinese instructors to teach the language and culture in the state’s public schools as soon as the Memorandum of Understanding is signed between the state and the institute.
“The knowledge of Chinese language will help students to further their studies in China and carry out research in various fields of human endeavour as China has become a success story in the world economy,” she said.

Common sense is indeed not common.

Nonsense. School kids can't manage English which they see written and hear spoken everyday so why confuse them with Chinese? Confucius Institute bringing confusion to Nigeria and the hmmm...clowns welcoming them with open arms. Guess who would be the loser in the end?

There's nothing wrong in learning Chinese, but it's not good to force students to learn it. It'll be good if they make Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Urhobo, etc. languages in the curriculum so students can learn other languages of our mother tongue. Those who would love to learn Chinese can learn it at a highscool or college level per-say cuz not everyone will "further their studies in China" at the end. Some are not yet good at speaking or writing English (our official language) or their own native tongue and they want to bring in Chinese. Let them bring chopsticks and their whole culture to make it complete. Nonsense

My friend you want them to introduce which language? in my secondary school days, we studied,IGBO,HAUSA,YORUBA,FRENCH AND ARABIC (You must select at least a local dialect). So, I see nothing wrong in learning Chinese language.

Lagos Nigeria be well informed that the Chinese/Asians in general don't care about Nigerian in particular rather what they get from you and not you achieve from them, if Chinese is introduced in Public school is a trick to import more Chinese into Lagos and it environs, How many people speak French as a language in our public school or Lagos street? How many French teachers do we have in public schools? That is the second adopted language of Nigeria which is boldly writing on our international passport, what is wrong with Nigerians position holders? This is absolute madness
