Women and drinking: Time to talk risks

• Liver damage. Women develop liver inflammation more quickly, with less alcohol, than men do.

• Heart disease. While light drinking is good for aging hearts, heavy drinking harms the heart muscle.

• Bosom  cancer. Women who have one drink a day have a 10% higher risk than non-drinkers, and the risk rises as women drink more.

• Pregnancy harm. During pregnancy, any amount of drinking is risky, and heavy drinking puts a fetus at risk for learning, behavioral and other problems.

• Alcohol dependence. Women who drink more than seven drinks a week or more than three drinks on any day are considered at risk; for men, the limits are 14 drinks a week or four drinks on any day.

• Death, injury and abuse. Alcohol is a factor in 60% of homicides, half of segxwal assaults and 40% of suicides, fatal car crashes and fatal falls.

Glaser says she still drinks her one or two glasses of wine each evening and doesn't want to deprive other women who can safely and happily do the same. But, she says, women should stop to think just how badly they need that wine. "You shouldn't be racing for it as if it is first aid."
